The Websites I Used for My Research Are:
Naval District Washington
This website is credible because it has a ".mil" extension. Also, at the bottom of the page it has the address for Naval District Washington. It also gives the date in which the article was published and by whom it was published by. Located at the very bottom, it says "This is an official US Navy website", and it has what looks like the official seal.
The Molossian Naval Academy
To begin with, the website is credible because it's a ".org" website. The website is also the main website for the Molossian Naval Academy, a school for the study of military sciences. At the bottom of the page, there is an email you can use to contact the administration if you have any questions. All of the links on the website work as well.
History Channel
This website is the official website for the History Channel. At the bottom of the page, there is a copyright and it is dated as 2014. There is also a FAQ/Contact Us page where anyone can contact the website administration. All of the links work on the website as well.
What I Learned!
Website #1 suggests that the US Military obliterated Japan's naval strength, and that it was one of the most decisive victories in warfare history. Before the Battle of Midway, Japan had succeeded in spreading imperialism and obtaining territory throughout Asia and the Pacific as well. The Battle of Midway was the shift of momentum from the Japanese to the Americans(Website 1). If the Japanese were successful in capturing Midway, they could attack Hawaii anytime they wanted(Website 1). The Americans were able to break the Japanese code, and figure out their plan(Website 1). As a result, they found the Japanese before the Japanese found them(Website 1). The Americans were able to find out the time of Japanese arrival and the location of their fleet. It was a great exhibit of intelligence on the American's part. The bravery of the US caused Japan to lose 4 irreplaceable aircraft carriers(Website 1). The Battle of Midway put an end to the Japanese expansion in the Pacific (Website 1).
The Battle of Midway put the US on the offensive, and the Japanese on the defensive(Website 2). The Japanese loss of four carries greatly impaired their efforts for expansion in the Pacific(Website 2). It was at the very last minute that Admiral Nimitz was able to gather all of the information on Japanese location, and organize an ambush. The Japanese had not been able to start their attack yet, when the US began attacking them(Website 2). This allowed the US an advantage. The Japanese did in fact attack and heavily damage the US base on Midway, but the base was still functioning. Admiral Yamamoto had told his superiors that after Pearl Harbor, Japan would only prevail over the US for six months to a year. He was right! (Website 2)
On June 4, 1942, Admiral Chuichi Nagumo launched a raid on Midway Island using almost the entire Japanese Navy(Website 3). Japan wanted to widen their influence, they targeted islands in the central pacific. They were hoping to cause the wounded US navy to have to go into battle so the Japs could finish it off. The Japanese were planning a second wave of attacks on Midway, and while they were refueling the US attacked them. The US took advantage of the horrible plan on the Japaneses' part(Website 3). The US sunk three of the four major Japanese aircraft carriers(Website 3). The US lost about 65 airplanes and the American Yorktown. However, the US' lost was nothing compared to the Japanese's'. The Japs lost 322 aircraft and 3,500 men(Website 3). There was no question that the US had succeeded greatly. The Japanese were forced to leave the area before they even tired to land on the island that they were planning to take(Website 3).
